Learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience
for the future.
French is generally taught at Geoffrey Field, but we encourage children to use words and phrases they may know in other languages. Learning a language enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and helps to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.
Children enjoy taking an active part in language lessons. They learn through playing games, singing, role play, songs/rhymes and the reading of short stories/poems.
By the end of Year 6, each child can read short texts, write descriptive phrases/sentences and speak in a small group confidently.
We currently choose to teach French across all year groups, but do encourage children to celebrate other languages spoken in the school.
