Religious Education (RE) Curriculum at Geoffrey Field Junior School


The aims of our RE curriculum 

At Geoffrey Field Junior School, our pupils learn about and from a range of World faiths and views, offering them the opportunity to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally and to reflect on their own beliefs, while sharing and developing knowledge of each others’ beliefs and customs.

Our RE Curriculum

At Geoffrey Field Junior School, RE is taught flexibly through lessons and cross-curricular study days. Visiting speakers and visits to places of worship complement the programmes of study. During RE lessons, children will have varied experiences including the use of artefacts, videos, drama, art and discussion. The contribution of personal knowledge and experiences is encouraged, valued and respected. This reflects and supports the school’s inclusive ethos and our school’s localised curriculum:

  • Oracy – Through discussion and questioning 
  • Vocabulary – Learning and using selected religious vocabulary 
  • Cultural experiences – Listening to visitors, participating in visits, watching videos and handling artefacts
  • Understanding and awareness of the wider geographical, cultural and religious world – Studying a broad range of world faiths and practices 

Skills and attitudes are developed during the key stage. Children are encouraged to explore, enquire and discuss their learning about faiths, beliefs and world views and to consider the impact they have on people’s lives and the world around them. They are also encouraged to express their ideas and opinions and listen to other people’s views with respect. 

We follow the Reading SACRE agreed syllabus. Christianity is studied in every year group and within the key stage, children will also have learnt about Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism. In each unit, the children will learn about religious leaders and sacred texts. They will learn about the core beliefs of each faith and how these can guide lifestyle choices. They will also recognise how religious identity can be shaped by families and communities. As the children progress through the key stage, they will also consider how people’s beliefs are reflected by their actions and practices and how these help them to respond to life experiences and ‘Big Questions’.

Impact – Our children leave Geoffrey Field Junior School with the attitudes and knowledge that will enable them to understand and respect the beliefs and customs of all individuals and communities. They will continue to explore spiritual and moral questions and develop their own beliefs and the impact their actions and decisions have on their own lives and the lives of others.
